Stanford Medicine: $20 million awarded for AI-guided research facilities

Stanford Medicine has published a story on the National Science Foundation award funding GEMSTONE: a $20 million grant to develop the standards for programmable cloud laboratories — remotely operated, AI-driven facilities that can run experiments autonomously.

The award is part of a larger $400 million national initiative to establish twenty such facilities. The story describes how the Stanford-led team — with Purdue University, Morehouse College, and Emerald Cloud Lab, which operates the remote laboratory in Texas — will translate natural-language descriptions of research protocols into procedures that machines can follow, and features principal investigator Mark Musen on what shared, remotely accessible laboratories change about who gets to do significant research.
